Bragging on Facebook

In 2 Corinthians 12, Paul says, "the Lord said, 'My grace is all you need. Only when you are weak can everything be done completely by my Power.' So I will gladly boast about my weaknesses."

I was thinking about this and how it relates to Facebook. People tend to mainly post positive things on Facebook. They brag about their accomplishments and their kids. People don't generally post things that display their weaknesses.

Facebook is a good way for family members to keep up with each other's lives. That is certainly a positive benefit. However, most people have dozens, if not hundreds of "friends" on Facebook. If we only sent messages to family and close friends, we may be more willing to share our warts. We are very hesitant to do so when we know many people will read about our shortcomings.

Maybe this is the opposite of how we should be. What if, instead of always posting positive things, we posted about our weaknesses? What would people think? Would they think less of us? Would we be better able to do God's will in only His power?

I would love to post about my weaknesses but I am not sure how I can do that without negative consequences. For example, what if I put something on Facebook every time I do not handle a situation with my kids appropriately? I can see someone eventually calling social services out of concern. "He only posts about the times he is mean to his kids. Most people don't do that. He must do even worse things in private that he does not post."

So, for now, I don't post on Facebook very often. I'll keep looking for ways to share my weaknesses in a way that makes me less but makes God greater.
